Like many Chicagoans, our clients had a depressing backyard that
was a sea of concrete between their house and garage. They were
looking for an aesthetically appealing space for their new family
and dog.
We approached the design of this space with the idea of providing a clean, modern
look to work in concert with the space's character.
We introduced steel containers, which were left in their natural weathered condition
to compliment the rust tones of the garden's slate walls. These containers were
layered in a manner that is both visually appealing and allows for the practical
use of maintenance and access. Alongside the containers, we united the garden
with plantings that show color throughout the seasons, as well as variously-sized
boulders and bluestone-chips.
The finished design, then, is something the clients can manipulate themselves whenever a creative impulse strikes.
